Ploče Through the Eyes of Paul Bradbury – Why This Hidden Gem Deserves a Visit
If, like many, you’ve driven from Split to Dubrovnik and passed through Ploče without giving it much thought, it might be time to rethink your next trip. Renowned travel writer Paul Bradbury has recently visited our town and captured its unique charm in his latest video, showcasing why Ploče is a destination worth discovering.
In his video, Paul gives Ploče the spotlight it deserves, emphasizing the town’s affordability and the refreshing alternative it offers compared to its more tourist-heavy neighbors like Makarska and Dubrovnik.
Ploče – A Town Waiting to be Explored
Ploče is often overlooked, but that’s what makes it so special. Less crowded, more relaxed, and offering a more authentic Dalmatian experience, our town is a hidden gem on the coast. In his video, Paul Bradbury highlights the very things we locals love about Ploče—its affordability for both holidays and real estate, the laid-back lifestyle, and its appeal for those looking for something a little off the beaten path.
What Paul Bradbury Loved About Ploče
In the video, Paul takes viewers through some of the lesser-known attractions of Ploče and shares why it stands out:
-
The port town vibe: Ploče is a working port town, and there’s a certain charm to watching ships come and go. Paul captures the authentic feel of the waterfront, showing off the views of the sea and stunning sunsets.
-
Local nature: One of the highlights Paul points out is the nearby Baćina Lakes, a must-see for anyone visiting. Perfect for nature lovers, this area is ideal for hiking, boating, or simply enjoying the serene environment.
-
Cuisine and affordability: Paul enjoyed the local cuisine, and with good reason. Ploče offers fantastic food at reasonable prices, whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood or traditional Dalmatian dishes like peka.
-
Real estate: If you’re thinking long-term, Paul notes that Ploče is an attractive option for those considering buying property on the Adriatic coast—more affordable than Dubrovnik or Makarska, but still offering proximity to the sea and all its benefits.

Why We Locals Love Ploče
As locals, we see the beauty in what Paul Bradbury has captured so well in his video. Ploče is not just a place to pass through—it’s a destination where you can experience the real Dalmatia, away from the crowds, and at your own pace. Whether you’re visiting for the day or thinking about a longer stay, we hope Paul’s video inspires you to stop and see what makes our town so special.
As someone who lives here, I can tell you that our town has a lot more to offer than you might expect. Next time you’re on the road, consider taking a break here, even if it’s just for lunch.
The diverse landscape of Croatia is perhaps most strikingly visible in Ploče, where mountain cliffs seamlessly merge with the fertile Neretva Valley, tranquil lakes, and the Adriatic coastline within a small radius. This young town, located halfway between Split and Dubrovnik, offers visitors a variety of sports and recreational activities, lively fishermen’s evenings, and fascinating excursions—among which a visit to the stunning Baćina Lakes is a must.
These relatively small and irregularly shaped lakes are some of the most intriguing natural phenomena in the karst landscape, consisting of six interconnected lakes and one separate lake: Oćuša, Crniševo, Podgora, Sladinac, Vrbnik, Šipak, and Plitko Lake. The water in the lakes is fresh, although there are also springs connected to the sea. The lakes are cryptodepressions, meaning their bottoms lie below sea level.
The Neretva Delta landscape is unlike any other part of Croatia, offering a unique blend of ecosystems and natural beauty. Make sure to take the time to immerse yourself in its distinctive charm and breathtaking scenery—it’s an experience you won’t forget.
